The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi has crossed a significant milestone by completing 1,000 robotic surgeries, highlighting the growing role of advanced technology in complex medical procedures in India. The achievement comes a little over a year after the hospital introduced the robotic surgical programme using the da Vinci system.
Doctors at the institute said the first robotic surgery under the programme was performed in November 2024. Since then, the technology has been used in a range of procedures across departments, allowing surgeons to perform operations with greater precision and smaller incisions.
Robotic surgery is considered particularly useful in delicate operations because it allows doctors to operate with enhanced visual clarity and improved control of surgical instruments. According to members of the surgical team, the programme has been the result of several years of preparation and training before it was formally introduced at the hospital.
Despite the milestone, doctors at AIIMS said the journey of integrating robotic technology into routine surgical practice is still evolving. They noted that wider adoption will depend on expanding training, improving access to equipment and building greater expertise within the healthcare system.
