Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Assam is witnessing rapid expansion in healthcare infrastructure and medical education, noting that the state is gradually moving towards medical self-sufficiency.
Speaking at a public event in Assam, Shah said the state government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken several steps to strengthen the health sector over the past few years. He pointed to the establishment of new medical colleges, expansion of hospitals and improvements in healthcare services across districts.
According to officials, the growing network of medical colleges and hospitals is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialised treatment. The expansion is also aimed at improving the availability of doctors and trained healthcare professionals within Assam.
The Union minister said the focus on medical education and healthcare infrastructure is part of a broader effort to strengthen public health systems in the Northeast. Increased investment in hospitals, diagnostic facilities and training institutions is expected to improve access to treatment in both urban and rural areas.
State authorities have said that continued expansion of healthcare facilities will remain a priority as Assam works to build a stronger and more self-reliant health system.
