The Union Budget’s proposal to develop five regional medical hubs marks a fresh attempt to strengthen tertiary care infrastructure while positioning India as a destination for advanced treatment and medical tourism.
The plan envisages the creation of integrated centres with high end clinical facilities, research capabilities and training institutions. These hubs are expected to cater not only to domestic demand but also to international patients seeking cost effective specialised care.
Alongside this, the government has proposed expanding capacity in traditional medicine with new institutes focused on Ayurveda, reflecting an effort to widen the scope of India’s healthcare offerings. The emphasis is on building ecosystems that combine modern medicine, research and wellness services.
Policy experts say the initiative aligns with a broader strategy to move beyond basic healthcare access and invest in quality, specialisation and innovation. However, they caution that the success of such hubs will depend on execution, including availability of skilled personnel and robust regulatory frameworks.
The announcement signals a shift in focus towards creating centres of excellence, even as the challenge of strengthening primary and secondary healthcare systems continues to demand attention.
