Centre cautions pharma firms against advertising prescription weight loss drugs
India’s drug regulator has warned pharmaceutical companies against directly or indirectly promoting prescription medicines used for weight management, amid growing marketing campaigns around obesity treatments.
The advisory issued by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation states that companies must not advertise weight loss medicines to the public. Authorities have also cautioned firms against running disease awareness campaigns that may function as indirect promotion for specific prescription drugs.
Officials said advertisements that exaggerate the effectiveness of medicines, promise guaranteed results or minimise the importance of lifestyle changes could be considered misleading. Such promotional activity may invite regulatory action under existing drug laws that prohibit the marketing of prescription medicines to consumers.
The warning comes at a time when global pharmaceutical companies are expanding their presence in India’s obesity drug market. Several firms have stepped up outreach through digital campaigns, public messaging and partnerships with influencers highlighting obesity as a disease.
Health authorities emphasised that obesity is a complex metabolic condition that requires a combination of medical supervision, diet and lifestyle modification. Regulators said drug therapy should not be projected as a standalone solution for weight management.
