India is intensifying its push to prevent cervical cancer with several states expanding the rollout of the Human Papillomavirus vaccination programme targeting adolescent girls. Public health authorities say the initiative is aimed at reducing the burden of cervical cancer, which remains one of the most common cancers among women in the country.
Health departments in multiple states have begun campaigns to administer the vaccine primarily to girls in the 9 to 15 age group through schools and government health centres. Officials said the programme is being integrated with existing public health outreach efforts to ensure higher coverage, particularly in rural and underserved regions.
Cervical cancer is largely preventable through vaccination and early screening. According to health experts, HPV infection is responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases, making the vaccine a key preventive tool. The government has been working to expand awareness and encourage parents to opt for the vaccine for eligible adolescents.
The expanded vaccination drive is also supported by awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of early prevention and regular screening for women. Health officials say the programme is expected to strengthen India’s long-term efforts to reduce cervical cancer incidence and improve women’s health outcomes across the country.
