In a quiet but potentially consequential shift in public health policy, Maharashtra has become the first state in India to launch government-run menopause clinics within its public healthcare system, formally acknowledging a life stage that has remained largely invisible in state-led medical planning.
The clinics, being introduced across select state hospitals and urban health centres, are designed to provide integrated care for menopausal and perimenopausal women, including hormonal assessments, cardiac risk screening, mental health counselling and lifestyle guidance. For decades, such services have largely been confined to private hospitals or fragmented specialist consultations, effectively placing comprehensive menopause care out of reach for most women.
Health officials say the initiative responds to a growing recognition that menopause is not merely a natural transition but a period associated with heightened risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, metabolic disorders and mental health challenges. By institutionalising menopause care within the public system, the state is attempting to shift the discourse from symptom management to preventive, longitudinal healthcare.
Public health experts view the move as a long-overdue correction in a system historically skewed towards maternal and reproductive health while overlooking midlife and ageing-related needs of women. However, they caution that the success of the programme will hinge on consistent staffing, clinician training and integration with primary care, rather than being limited to a handful of pilot facilities.
If scaled effectively, Maharashtra’s model could offer a template for other states, signalling a broader reimagining of women’s health that extends beyond childbirth and fertility to encompass the full lifecycle.
