The Maharashtra government has directed health department officials to accelerate the completion of pending hospital infrastructure projects across the state, with a special focus on facilities nearing completion. The instruction comes amid concerns over delays that have kept several healthcare projects from becoming operational.
State Health Minister Prakash Abitkar asked officials to prioritise hospitals where a substantial portion of construction work has already been completed. According to the directive, projects that have crossed around 80 percent of completion should be fast tracked so that medical services can begin without further delay.
The government has also emphasised the need to strengthen human resources in the public health system, particularly in rural and remote areas where staff shortages continue to affect service delivery. Officials have been asked to review vacancies and ensure that doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers are deployed where the need is most urgent.
Authorities said timely completion of infrastructure projects is essential to expand healthcare access and reduce the pressure on existing hospitals. Several districts continue to face heavy patient load, especially at government facilities that serve large rural populations.
The health department is expected to review the progress of ongoing projects and submit periodic updates to ensure that construction timelines are adhered to and newly built hospitals become operational at the earliest.
