Meghalaya has initiated steps to set up a dedicated Public Health Sciences University, with lawmakers tabling a bill aimed at strengthening institutional capacity in health education and research within the state.
The proposed university is intended to address longstanding gaps in trained public health professionals across the region. Officials said the institution would focus on teaching, research and field level training in epidemiology, disease surveillance, health policy and community medicine.
State representatives argued that the move is necessary given the unique public health challenges faced in the North East, including communicable diseases, maternal and child health concerns, and infrastructure constraints in remote areas. A specialised university, they said, would help create a steady pipeline of trained personnel equipped to work in difficult terrains.
The proposal also seeks to reduce dependence on institutions outside the state for advanced public health education. By building capacity locally, policymakers believe Meghalaya can improve response systems, planning and data driven interventions.
If cleared and implemented as planned, the university is expected to serve not only Meghalaya but also neighbouring states, contributing to a more coordinated and research driven approach to public health in the region.
