Meghalaya has reported the highest HIV caseload in the country relative to its population, with 10,293 people currently receiving antiretroviral therapy, according to figures placed before the state legislature.
Health authorities acknowledged that the numbers reflect a continuing public health challenge, particularly among vulnerable groups and in certain districts where prevalence rates remain elevated. Officials said sustained testing, early diagnosis and uninterrupted treatment remain central to the state’s strategy.
The state health department has expanded access to antiretroviral therapy centres and intensified awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and encouraging voluntary testing. However, public health experts caution that social barriers and delayed reporting continue to complicate response efforts.
Meghalaya’s situation has drawn attention to the need for targeted interventions in the North East, where demographic and socio economic factors require tailored approaches. Strengthening surveillance, community outreach and preventive education has been identified as a priority.
Authorities maintain that while treatment coverage has improved, the long term goal remains reducing fresh infections through sustained awareness, harm reduction measures and consistent public health engagement.
