The Prime Minister is set to inaugurate India’s first national human papillomavirus vaccination campaign in Ajmer on February 28, a step officials say will strengthen the country’s preventive health agenda against cervical cancer.
Government sources confirmed that the launch will mark the commencement of a nationwide drive to immunise adolescent girls against HPV, with an emphasis on building awareness and expanding access across states. The campaign is being positioned as a key public health intervention given the persistent burden of cervical cancer among women in India.
Authorities said the programme will focus on school based and community outreach efforts, supported by state health departments and frontline workers. Preparations in Rajasthan and neighbouring regions are underway to ensure logistics and cold chain management are in place ahead of the official launch.
Health experts welcomed the announcement, noting that early vaccination is critical to protect against HPV infection before exposure. They added that strong community engagement and clear communication will be essential for uptake in diverse demographic settings.
The initiative reflects an effort by the government to integrate HPV vaccination into broader immunisation frameworks, and to signal commitment to preventive healthcare priorities.
