A critical care block estimated at Rs 25 crore has been launched at the district hospital in Poonch, strengthening tertiary care capacity in the border district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said the facility is being developed under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and is expected to improve access to advanced treatment, particularly for patients requiring intensive and emergency care. The project includes provisions for modern equipment and an integrated public health laboratory.
Health authorities indicated that the new block will reduce the need for patients to travel to larger cities for specialised treatment. Poonch, given its terrain and distance from major urban centres, has faced persistent challenges in accessing advanced healthcare services.
The addition of critical care infrastructure is intended to strengthen preparedness for medical emergencies and infectious disease management. Officials maintained that expanding district level capacity remains central to improving outcomes in remote regions.
The project forms part of a broader push to upgrade healthcare facilities across underserved areas, with an emphasis on strengthening public sector institutions at the district level.
