At a mental health awareness event in Chennai on Friday, former President Ram Nath Kovind emphasised the urgent need to treat suicide prevention as a national priority, calling for strengthened support systems and community based interventions.
Addressing health professionals and civil society members, Kovind said that suicide is not merely an individual crisis but a broader social challenge that requires cohesive action from government, healthcare providers and local communities. He highlighted the importance of early intervention, accessible counselling services and sustained public education to reduce stigma around mental health.
Speakers at the event also discussed the role of schools, workplaces and grassroots organisations in identifying at risk individuals and ensuring timely support. Kovind called for investment in mental health infrastructure and training of counsellors to expand the reach of preventive services.
The former President’s remarks come against a backdrop of growing concerns over youth mental health and rising rates of distress. He underlined that collaborative efforts must be backed with data driven policies, robust crisis helplines and integrated care pathways to make a meaningful impact.
Kovind urged all stakeholders to view suicide prevention through a public health lens and to accelerate work on strategies that protect vulnerable populations and foster resilience.
