Telangana is set to introduce a statewide Human Papillomavirus vaccination programme targeting adolescent girls in the 14 to 15 year age group, marking a significant step in its preventive healthcare strategy. The initiative is aimed at reducing the long term burden of cervical cancer and other HPV related diseases through early immunisation.
Health department officials have confirmed that the vaccination will be offered free of cost through government health facilities. The programme is expected to be voluntary, with an emphasis on awareness, parental consent and institutional preparedness before full scale implementation.
Preparatory work is already underway. Healthcare workers are being trained to manage storage, administration protocols and post vaccination monitoring. District level coordination meetings have been held to streamline logistics and ensure cold chain compliance across urban and rural centres.
Public health experts view the move as timely, given that cervical cancer continues to remain one of the leading causes of cancer related mortality among women in India. By focusing on early adolescence, the state aims to maximise vaccine efficacy and widen long term protection.
The rollout in Telangana aligns with broader national discussions on expanding access to the HPV vaccine under public health frameworks. With structured planning and administrative backing, the programme is expected to strengthen preventive oncology efforts and set a template for other states considering similar interventions.
