The World Health Organization has launched a regional initiative to strengthen field epidemiology capacity across countries in South-East Asia, including India, with the aim of improving disease surveillance and outbreak response systems.
The programme focuses on training public health professionals to detect, investigate and respond to infectious disease outbreaks more effectively. Health experts say stronger field epidemiology networks are critical for early identification of emerging health threats and for limiting the spread of infectious diseases.
According to the WHO, the initiative will support countries in building a skilled workforce capable of conducting field investigations, analysing disease data and coordinating public health responses during emergencies. Training programmes and technical support will also be provided to strengthen collaboration between national health agencies and regional institutions.
Officials noted that lessons from recent global health emergencies have highlighted the importance of rapid surveillance systems and well trained epidemiologists. Strengthening these capacities is expected to help countries respond more quickly to outbreaks and improve overall public health preparedness in the region.
