As part of the ongoing Janaushadhi Saptah 2026, health authorities across the country have been organising free medical camps, health screenings and awareness programmes to promote the use of affordable generic medicines and expand access to basic healthcare services.
The week-long campaign forms part of the government’s Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), an initiative designed to make quality medicines available at significantly lower prices through a nationwide network of Janaushadhi Kendras.
On the fourth day of the campaign, several states reported the organisation of health check-up camps in hospitals, community centres and rural areas, where medical professionals are providing consultations, diagnostic screenings and guidance on preventive healthcare. Officials said the outreach activities are intended to raise awareness about the availability of low-cost generic drugs that can substantially reduce treatment expenses for patients.
The programme also seeks to address a long-standing challenge within India’s healthcare system: the high level of out-of-pocket medical expenditure borne by households. Despite the expansion of public health schemes and insurance coverage, medicines continue to account for a significant share of healthcare spending for many families.
Through the Janaushadhi network, the government aims to make commonly used medicines available at prices that are often 50 to 90 per cent lower than branded alternatives, improving affordability for economically vulnerable populations.
Officials said the awareness campaign is also encouraging pharmacists, doctors and healthcare institutions to promote the prescription and use of generic medicines wherever clinically appropriate.
The Janaushadhi initiative has expanded steadily in recent years, with thousands of dedicated retail outlets now operating across India. Health authorities believe that continued expansion of the network, along with public awareness campaigns such as Janaushadhi Saptah, could play an important role in making healthcare more accessible and affordable for millions of patients across the country.
