Health Experts Recommend Water, Fruits, and Electrolyte Intake During Extreme Heat
Doctors across several Indian cities are advising people to reduce the consumption of sugary soft drinks and heavily caffeinated beverages as temperatures continue rising during the ongoing summer season.
Health experts say excessive intake of sugary and carbonated drinks during extreme heat can contribute to dehydration, fatigue, and energy crashes despite providing temporary relief from high temperatures. Physicians are instead encouraging people to prioritise water, fresh fruit intake, oral rehydration solutions, coconut water, and homemade electrolyte-rich beverages.
Hospitals in parts of north and central India have reported an increase in patients experiencing dehydration, headaches, dizziness, and heat-related exhaustion over the past week as heatwave conditions intensify in several states.
Medical professionals note that children, outdoor workers, elderly individuals, and people with existing health conditions remain particularly vulnerable during prolonged heat exposure.
Nutritionists also warn that excessive caffeine and packaged sugary drinks may increase fluid loss in the body when consumed in large quantities during peak summer conditions.
Public Health Specialists Emphasise Preventive Summer Care
Doctors recommend avoiding direct sunlight during afternoon hours, wearing light cotton clothing, and maintaining regular hydration throughout the day instead of waiting until signs of thirst appear.
Public health experts also stress the importance of balanced meals containing fruits with high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, and oranges during periods of extreme heat.
Several hospitals have additionally advised citizens to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as persistent dizziness, vomiting, confusion, or high fever develop during heat exposure.
Health authorities continue monitoring heat-related illness trends as temperatures remain above seasonal averages in multiple regions.
Medical experts say awareness and preventive care remain the most effective ways to reduce the risk of severe summer-related health complications.
