A combination of regular walking and healthy eating may be more effective in reducing belly fat than following either habit alone, according to a new study published in the International Journal of Obesity. Researchers found that people who walked regularly while maintaining a balanced diet had a lower risk of central obesity, a condition linked to excess fat around the waist.
Unlike general body weight, central obesity focuses on fat stored around the abdomen. Health experts consider this type of fat more harmful because it increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and several other long-term health conditions. The study suggests that combining physical activity with better food choices offers greater benefits than relying on just one lifestyle change.
The research analysed data collected during a 100-day walking programme, where participants wore pedometers to record their daily step count. Researchers also assessed their eating habits and measured different indicators of abdominal fat and body composition. They observed that participants who consistently walked more and followed healthier diets showed better waist measurements and body composition than those who improved only one of these habits.
Walking remains one of the easiest forms of exercise because it does not require expensive equipment or gym memberships. Health organisations recommend regular physical activity for people of all ages, and walking can easily be included in daily routines by choosing stairs, walking to nearby destinations or taking short walks during work breaks.
Researchers also noted that healthy eating played an equally important role. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses and lean protein supported better health outcomes when combined with regular walking. On the other hand, frequent consumption of highly processed foods and sugary drinks reduced the benefits of physical activity.
The findings come at a time when obesity is becoming a growing public health challenge worldwide. Recent global research has shown that obesity rates are rising more rapidly in many developing countries, increasing the burden of chronic diseases on healthcare systems. In India, abdominal obesity is also becoming more common across different states and age groups, making preventive lifestyle changes increasingly important.
Experts say there is no single solution for maintaining a healthy weight. While medicines and specialised treatments may be necessary for some people, everyday habits such as regular walking, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep and stress management continue to be the foundation of good health. Building these habits early can also reduce the long-term risk of lifestyle diseases.
The study reinforces a simple message. Small changes carried out consistently often produce better results than extreme diets or short-term fitness programmes. Walking more each day while making healthier food choices may not only help reduce belly fat but also improve overall health, energy levels and quality of life. As sedentary lifestyles become more common, these practical habits could play an important role in reducing the growing burden of obesity and related diseases
