SkyDrive, Air India and Suzuki are moving ahead with a study to identify potential routes for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to carry urgent medical supplies in India. The latest phase will examine specific routes linking pharmaceutical facilities, airports and hospitals, with a focus on cases where saving travel time can directly support patient care.
SkyDrive announced on 25 August that the three companies will evaluate initial operational routes under the memorandum of understanding signed in July. The project is aimed at finding practical uses for eVTOL aircraft in India, where heavy traffic in major cities can delay time-sensitive medical deliveries.
One of the proposed uses is the emergency movement of radioactive isotopes used in cancer diagnosis and treatment. These medical products can have short half-lives, which means delays between production and hospital delivery can reduce their usefulness. SkyDrive said it will assess a potential route between a manufacturing facility in Mumbai and major hospitals in the surrounding area.
The companies will also study emergency transport of organs and other critical medical material between hospitals in the Delhi National Capital Region. According to SkyDrive, the assessment will examine whether eVTOL aircraft could reduce journeys that currently take around 30 to 90 minutes by ambulance to roughly 10 to 15 minutes. These figures are part of the feasibility assessment and do not represent an operational service currently available to hospitals.
The partnership brings together three different areas of expertise. SkyDrive is developing the eVTOL aircraft and related technology, Air India contributes aviation operations and knowledge of airport infrastructure, while Suzuki brings its experience of the Indian market and manufacturing capabilities. The three companies signed their initial MoU on 31 July to study the feasibility of medical air logistics.
For India’s healthcare system, the project could be significant because medical logistics often depend on road transport. In crowded metropolitan areas, traffic can become a major barrier when medicines, diagnostic materials or organs need to reach their destination quickly. An aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing could potentially operate from locations closer to hospitals and other medical facilities, reducing dependence on congested roads.
The study will also look beyond healthcare. SkyDrive said the companies plan to examine emergency transport of aircraft parts between collection hubs, maintenance bases and airport facilities around Delhi. Delays in delivering replacement parts can keep aircraft on the ground for longer, making this another potential use for faster urban transport.
Any future medical logistics operation would require coordination with government and aviation authorities and would be subject to the necessary regulatory approvals. The current announcement therefore marks a route evaluation and feasibility stage rather than a confirmed commercial launch.
The project adds a new dimension to India’s growing interest in advanced air mobility. Rather than focusing only on passenger transport, the partnership is examining whether eVTOL aircraft can first address high-value, time-sensitive logistics. If the proposed routes prove safe, practical and economically viable, medical transport could become one of the early areas where advanced air mobility finds a real-world role in India.
