Actor and UNFPA India advocate Soha Ali Khan has called for the ethical deployment of artificial intelligence to protect and empower women, stressing that technological advancement must be anchored in rights-based frameworks.
Speaking in her capacity as an advocate for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) India, Khan underscored that AI systems influencing healthcare, information access and public services must uphold women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights. She warned that without adequate safeguards, algorithmic tools risk reinforcing gender biases, excluding marginalised communities and compromising privacy.
Khan highlighted the growing role of AI in areas such as telemedicine, health data management and awareness platforms, noting that these technologies hold transformative potential if developed responsibly. However, she emphasised the need for transparency, accountability and inclusive design to ensure that women are not reduced to data points but recognised as rights-bearing individuals.
Her remarks come amid expanding policy conversations in India around digital governance and AI regulation. By foregrounding gender equity in the technology debate, Khan’s intervention places women’s health and bodily autonomy at the centre of the country’s evolving digital future.
