A section of government medical practitioners in Tamil Nadu has announced that it will launch a strike beginning February 27, 2026, escalating long-standing grievances over pay disparities and stalled promotions. The doctors, representing various cadres within the state’s public health system, allege that repeated assurances from the state health leadership regarding salary revision and time-bound career advancement have not translated into concrete policy action.
While the proposed agitation is set to disrupt routine outpatient services across government hospitals, the association has stated that emergency and critical care services will continue in the initial phase to avoid jeopardising patient safety. However, representatives have warned that if the government fails to initiate dialogue or issue formal orders addressing their demands, the protest could intensify into a hunger strike.
The move comes at a time when public health infrastructure remains under sustained pressure, with government hospitals serving as the primary healthcare providers for economically vulnerable populations. Doctors argue that unresolved service conditions risk demoralising frontline professionals and affecting healthcare delivery standards.
The state government has yet to issue a detailed response. For now, the impending strike underscores the fragile balance between workforce welfare and uninterrupted public health services.
