President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday underscored the relevance of traditional Indian systems of medicine, stating that Ayurveda and Yoga offer a pathway towards a healthier future if integrated thoughtfully into public health efforts.
Addressing a health gathering in Nagpur, the President said India’s ancient knowledge systems place strong emphasis on prevention and balance, principles that remain relevant amid the growing burden of lifestyle diseases. She observed that preventive healthcare must receive as much attention as curative services, particularly as non communicable diseases continue to rise.
Referring to Ayurveda, Yoga and other indigenous practices, the President noted that these systems promote holistic well being by linking physical, mental and social health. She called for greater research, scientific validation and institutional support to strengthen their credibility and reach.
The remarks come at a time when policymakers are increasingly speaking about integrative healthcare models that combine traditional systems with modern medicine. Public health experts point out that while interest in alternative therapies has grown, sustained investment in training, regulation and evidence based practice will determine long term impact.
The event in Nagpur brought together practitioners, students and health officials, reflecting a wider effort to position preventive wellness as a central pillar of India’s healthcare strategy.
