The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has outlined an expanded public health agenda in its 2026–27 budget, announcing plans to build a 16 storey hospital in Kamathipura within a year while introducing technology driven screening measures across the city.
Civic officials said the proposed hospital is expected to strengthen tertiary care capacity in a densely populated part of south Mumbai. The project is being positioned as part of a broader effort to upgrade municipal health infrastructure and reduce pressure on existing facilities.
Alongside infrastructure expansion, the civic body has proposed the use of artificial intelligence based eye screening for early detection of diabetic retinopathy. Health administrators believe that such screening can help identify complications at an early stage and prevent avoidable vision loss among diabetic patients.
The budget also makes provision for additional dialysis centres, reflecting the rising burden of chronic kidney disease in urban populations. Officials have indicated that expanding access to dialysis at the municipal level will reduce out of pocket expenditure for economically vulnerable patients.
While the announcements signal intent to modernise public healthcare delivery, health policy observers note that execution timelines and sustained funding will determine the long term impact of these measures. The coming year will test whether the civic body can translate allocations into tangible improvements on the ground.
