A government hospital in Kolkata has carried out a complex cardiac procedure involving the implantation of a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, marking a notable step in the adoption of advanced medical technology in the public healthcare system.
Doctors at SSKM Hospital implanted the device in a 66-year-old patient suffering from serious heart rhythm disturbances. The procedure is considered significant because dual-chamber leadless pacemakers are relatively new and are typically available only at select private hospitals due to their cost and technical demands.
Unlike conventional pacemakers that rely on leads or wires placed inside the heart, the leadless system works through small capsule-like devices implanted directly within the heart chambers. This reduces the risk of infection associated with wires and pockets created under the skin, while also shortening recovery time for patients.
Doctors involved in the procedure said the technology offers a safer alternative for patients who face complications with traditional pacemaker systems. The implantation required careful coordination between cardiologists, electrophysiologists and specialised surgical teams.
While such procedures in private hospitals can cost significantly higher, the treatment at the government facility was offered at a comparatively lower cost. Health officials say expanding access to advanced cardiac technologies in public hospitals remains an important step in improving treatment availability for patients who cannot afford private healthcare.
