Medical experts have called for greater attention to environmental and lifestyle factors as part of efforts to address the growing burden of kidney disease in India.
Doctors speaking at a public health discussion in Panaji said treatment alone cannot effectively manage kidney-related illnesses unless broader environmental risks are also addressed. They pointed to pollution, contaminated water sources and prolonged exposure to harmful chemicals as contributing factors.
Specialists noted that in several regions, poor water quality and exposure to industrial pollutants may be increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease. At the same time, lifestyle issues such as unhealthy diets, diabetes and high blood pressure continue to play a major role.
Health professionals said prevention strategies should include improving water safety, monitoring environmental pollution and promoting healthier living habits. Public awareness campaigns and early screening programmes were also highlighted as important steps to detect kidney problems before they progress to severe stages.
Experts stressed that a combined approach involving medical treatment, environmental protection and public health awareness will be necessary to slow the rise of kidney disease in the country.
