The government’s flagship health insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat, continues to widen its reach, with the number of issued health cards crossing 43 crore. The expansion reflects a steady effort to extend financial protection to vulnerable households and bring more citizens within the fold of institutional healthcare.
Officials point to growing enrolment alongside an increase in digital health records, suggesting a parallel push to strengthen data systems that support service delivery. The inclusion of senior citizens and other previously uncovered groups signals an attempt to address gaps that had limited the scheme’s scope in its earlier phases.
Yet, questions around access and quality remain. The availability of empanelled hospitals, particularly in smaller towns and rural districts, continues to shape how effectively beneficiaries can use the scheme. Delays in claim settlements and uneven awareness also persist as operational challenges.
Even so, the programme marks a structural shift in how healthcare costs are managed in India. Its long-term impact will depend not only on the scale of coverage but on the system’s ability to ensure timely and reliable care for those it seeks to protect.
