Cracks have emerged in Rajasthan’s flagship health coverage programme, with private hospitals warning of a possible halt to cashless medicine supply under the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme (RGHS). The disruption, linked to delayed reimbursements, has brought into focus the financial stresses within publicly funded insurance models.
Hospital representatives say dues have been pending for several months, in some cases stretching between seven and nine months. The backlog has strained working capital, prompting providers to signal that services may no longer be sustainable without timely payments.
For beneficiaries, particularly pensioners who rely heavily on the scheme, any interruption could translate into immediate out-of-pocket expenses. The uncertainty has raised concerns about continuity of care, especially for patients requiring long-term medication.
The episode points to a recurring challenge in government-backed health insurance programmes. While coverage has expanded rapidly, payment mechanisms have often struggled to keep pace, leading to friction between the state and private providers who form a critical part of the delivery network.
Addressing these bottlenecks will be essential to maintaining confidence in such schemes. Without predictable payment cycles, the risk is that participation by private hospitals could weaken, limiting access for patients the programmes are designed to support.
