The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched a comprehensive learning resource package and e-learning modules to strengthen zoonotic disease surveillance and response across India. The initiative aims to improve the capacity of healthcare professionals to detect, report and manage diseases that spread between animals and humans, reinforcing the country’s public health preparedness.
The digital learning modules have been designed for healthcare workers, public health professionals and disease surveillance teams. They cover key areas such as early disease detection, outbreak investigation, laboratory coordination, reporting mechanisms and interdepartmental collaboration. The programme supports India’s One Health approach, which recognises the close connection between human, animal and environmental health.
Health experts note that strengthening surveillance systems is critical for identifying emerging infectious diseases before they spread widely. Digital learning platforms allow frontline healthcare workers to access standardised training materials, improve their response capabilities and stay updated on the latest surveillance protocols.
The initiative also promotes better coordination between healthcare institutions, veterinary departments and public health agencies. Experts believe such collaboration can improve preparedness for outbreaks involving diseases such as avian influenza, Nipah virus and other zoonotic infections that require rapid, coordinated action.
Public health specialists say continuous professional training is essential as new infectious diseases continue to emerge globally. Technology-enabled learning helps ensure that healthcare workers across urban and rural areas receive consistent, evidence-based guidance without disrupting routine healthcare services.
Officials believe the programme will strengthen India’s disease surveillance network by improving reporting accuracy, accelerating outbreak response and supporting informed public health decision-making. The initiative also complements the country’s broader digital health transformation and ongoing efforts to build a resilient healthcare system.
