The Central Government has approved a ₹1,332 crore National Health Mission (NHM) plan for Punjab after identifying key gaps in the state’s healthcare system, particularly in tuberculosis (TB) control, maternal health, immunisation and the management of non-communicable diseases. The funding aims to strengthen public health services, improve healthcare infrastructure and accelerate disease prevention programmes across the state.
During a review of Punjab’s health programmes, the Centre noted that the state’s TB burden remains higher than the national average and highlighted shortcomings in screening, diagnosis, preventive treatment and patient follow-up. Officials also pointed to challenges in maternal healthcare services, routine immunisation coverage and the management of lifestyle-related diseases. The newly approved NHM funding is intended to address these issues through targeted interventions.
The approved plan includes strengthening primary healthcare facilities, expanding disease surveillance, improving diagnostic services, supporting maternal and child healthcare, and enhancing the availability of essential medicines and trained healthcare personnel. Public health experts believe these measures will improve access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Healthcare specialists emphasise that early detection and timely treatment are essential for achieving India’s goal of eliminating tuberculosis. Improving immunisation coverage and maternal healthcare services can also significantly reduce preventable illnesses and improve long-term public health outcomes.
The National Health Mission continues to play a key role in strengthening healthcare delivery by supporting states with financial assistance for infrastructure development, workforce expansion and public health programmes. Experts say sustained investment in preventive healthcare remains critical for building a resilient healthcare system.
The approval of the ₹1,332 crore NHM plan reflects the government’s focus on addressing healthcare challenges through targeted funding and improved service delivery. Authorities expect the initiative to strengthen Punjab’s healthcare system while improving outcomes in TB control, maternal health and disease prevention.
