ESIC Expands Super-Speciality Healthcare Access for Workers in Gujarat

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has expanded access to advanced medical care for insured workers and their families in Gujarat after signing agreements with six healthcare institutions. The move will provide beneficiaries with access to tertiary and super-speciality treatment, including care at some of the state’s major medical centres.

The agreements were signed by the Gujarat Labour and Employment Department and ESIC in Gandhinagar. The initiative is aimed at strengthening healthcare support for workers covered under the ESIC system and their dependent family members. According to reports, beneficiaries will be able to access high-end medical treatment without the financial burden that can often come with specialised healthcare.

The six institutions include major healthcare centres such as the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, Gujarat Cancer Research Institute and AIIMS Rajkot. These institutions cover specialised areas of treatment and could give ESIC beneficiaries access to services that may not be available at smaller or primary healthcare facilities.

The expansion is important because specialised treatment can be expensive, particularly for serious illnesses that require surgery, long hospital stays, advanced diagnostics or specialist consultations. Wider access through the ESIC network could reduce the financial pressure on worker families while allowing patients to seek treatment at established medical institutions.

The initiative also highlights the importance of healthcare coverage for India’s workforce. Workers may require treatment for conditions that cannot be managed through basic outpatient services. Access to tertiary and super-speciality hospitals can therefore provide an additional layer of support when patients need more advanced medical intervention.

Gujarat has been expanding the network of healthcare institutions linked to the ESIC system. Reports said agreements have now been signed with 26 government institutions, while the process of bringing another 45 healthcare institutions into the network is continuing. This could further increase the number of locations where insured workers can receive specialised treatment.

The latest agreements also place greater focus on making better use of ESIC funds. Authorities have said that the system will be monitored to ensure that funds are used properly and that the scheme is not misused. This is important as wider healthcare access also requires strong systems to manage spending and maintain accountability.

For workers, the biggest benefit is the possibility of receiving advanced treatment without having to depend entirely on private healthcare arrangements. For their families, it can provide greater security when a serious medical condition requires specialised care.
