Centre Launches National Drug Registry to Standardise Medicine Information Across India

The Union Government has launched the National Drug Registry, a centralized digital database designed to provide a single, authenticated source of information on medicines used across India’s healthcare system. The initiative aims to standardise drug information, improve patient safety and support hospitals, pharmacies, healthcare professionals and digital health platforms with accurate and verified medicine data.

The registry assigns every approved medicine a unique digital identity, creating a uniform reference system for drug names, formulations, strengths and manufacturers. Health authorities believe this will minimise confusion arising from inconsistent drug information while improving prescribing practices and medicine management across healthcare facilities.

Medical experts say a unified drug database will help doctors prescribe medicines more accurately, pharmacists dispense the correct products and patients better understand the medications they receive. The system is also expected to support electronic prescriptions, hospital information systems and digital healthcare applications by ensuring consistent medicine records.
