The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, has announced that it will deploy a team of specialist doctors to provide medical assistance during the annual Amarnath Yatra 2026. The initiative is aimed at strengthening healthcare support for thousands of pilgrims undertaking one of India’s most challenging religious journeys.
According to AIIMS Patna, a five-member medical team comprising specialists from critical care and emergency medicine will be stationed at the Panchtarni Base Camp during the pilgrimage. The doctors will provide emergency medical treatment, trauma care and health support for pilgrims travelling through high-altitude terrain.
Medical experts note that the Amarnath Yatra presents unique healthcare challenges due to extreme weather conditions, low oxygen levels and physically demanding trekking routes. Pilgrims often require immediate medical attention for altitude sickness, dehydration, respiratory complications, hypothermia and cardiac emergencies.
The deployment reflects India’s growing emphasis on strengthening healthcare preparedness during large public events. AIIMS institutions regularly contribute specialist teams to national emergency response efforts, ensuring access to quality medical care in remote and difficult locations.
Healthcare professionals participating in the mission have received training in high-altitude emergency care and disaster response. Mobile medical units, emergency medicines and critical care equipment will be available to manage health emergencies throughout the pilgrimage.
Authorities have also strengthened coordination between hospitals, disaster response agencies and local health departments to ensure rapid evacuation and referral services whenever required. Such integrated planning is expected to improve emergency response times and enhance patient outcomes.
Public health specialists believe that proactive deployment of medical teams significantly reduces health risks during mass gatherings. Preventive health advisories, early medical intervention and well-equipped healthcare facilities are essential components of successful pilgrimage management.
The initiative also highlights the growing role of AIIMS institutions beyond tertiary healthcare, contributing to national public health missions and emergency preparedness. Similar deployments have supported disaster management operations, vaccination campaigns and large public events across the country.
As the Amarnath Yatra begins, healthcare authorities continue to advise pilgrims to undergo medical check-ups before travelling, stay hydrated and follow official safety guidelines throughout the journey. The deployment of specialist medical teams is expected to strengthen healthcare services while ensuring safer pilgrimage experiences for devotees.
