The study, published September 3 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, examined the possible relationship using a genetic research method called Mendelian randomisation. It was not a clinical trial.
Researchers say the findings suggest that hair loss among some men taking GLP-1 drugs may involve more than temporary hair shedding caused by rapid weight loss.
GLP-1 drugs and hair loss
GLP-1 medications are widely used for weight management and can also affect the body’s metabolism, insulin levels and other hormone-related processes.
According to researcher Lynn Petukhova, Ph.D., hair growth is influenced by several systems in the body. Changes in body weight, body fat, insulin and hormone-related pathways may all affect hair growth.
The study also found evidence suggesting that the GLP-1 receptor, known as GLP1R, could have a role in patterned hair loss.
Researchers said associations between GLP-1s and hair loss remained even after accounting for factors such as weight, blood pressure, insulin, and testosterone.
However, the study does not prove that GLP-1 medications directly cause male-pattern hair loss.
Not everyone taking GLP-1s will lose hair
Researchers stressed that people taking GLP-1 medications should not assume they will develop hair loss.
Temporary hair shedding can occur after rapid weight loss or changes in nutrition. This condition is known as telogen effluvium and can be temporary.
The new research suggests that the relationship between GLP-1 medications and hair loss could be more complicated, but it does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
The study also has important limitations. It was based on genetic research rather than a clinical trial and included only male participants because larger genetic datasets are available for male-pattern hair loss.
