Google’s Gemini Powers HealthVaani to Support India’s Frontline Health Workers

Artificial intelligence is being used to strengthen frontline healthcare in India, with Wadhwani AI and Google working together on HealthVaani, a conversational AI assistant designed to support ASHA and Anganwadi workers.

The initiative focuses on one of the most important links in India’s healthcare system: frontline workers who regularly interact with families and communities, including in areas where access to doctors and specialist services can be limited. HealthVaani is designed to give these workers quick access to verified, role-specific health information through a mobile-based interface.

HealthVaani uses Google’s Gemini models to support functions including translation, response generation and information retrieval. The technology is being developed for India’s multilingual environment, allowing frontline workers to interact with the system through voice and text and receive information in languages including Hindi, English and Hinglish.

The need for such tools is particularly relevant in rural and underserved areas, where frontline workers often have to handle a wide range of questions related to maternal health, child health, nutrition and other community health needs. Wadhwani AI says HealthVaani provides instant, role-specific information to ASHAs, ANMs and other healthcare workers, helping them access validated guidance while carrying out their daily responsibilities.

The project has also been designed with safeguards around the information provided to health workers. Wadhwani AI says HealthVaani relies on a curated knowledge base built from material published or validated by government health authorities rather than drawing freely from the wider internet. The organisation has also said that answers can include citations so users can check the underlying information.

Google has provided $2.5 million in Google.org funding to support the pilot of HealthVaani. The project was launched in partnership with the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare and Women and Child Development. Google has said the system uses Gemini 2.5 Flash for translation, answer generation and moderation, alongside the Gemini Embedding Model for retrieving relevant information.

The initiative builds on earlier pilot work by Wadhwani AI. Its HealthVaani programme has been tested with Anganwadi workers in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh. The organisation says more than 650 frontline workers have been trained across these six states.

For India’s healthcare system, the wider significance lies in how digital tools can support workers already operating at community level. Instead of replacing frontline workers, HealthVaani is intended to give them faster access to relevant information while they continue providing services and interacting directly with people.

As India expands its digital health infrastructure, initiatives such as HealthVaani show how AI is moving beyond consumer applications and into practical public health work. The effectiveness of such systems will ultimately depend on the quality of their information, responsible use and their ability to work across India’s many languages and healthcare settings.
