The Gujarat government has launched its annual health screening programme targeting 1.89 crore children studying in government, grant-in-aid and private schools across the state. The initiative aims to detect health conditions at an early stage, strengthen preventive healthcare and ensure timely treatment for school-going children.
Under the programme, teams of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers will conduct comprehensive health examinations covering vision, hearing, dental health, nutritional status and general physical development. Children identified with medical conditions requiring specialised care will be referred to appropriate healthcare facilities for further diagnosis and treatment.
Health experts say regular school-based screening programmes play a crucial role in identifying developmental disorders, anaemia, vision problems, hearing impairments and other health issues that may otherwise go unnoticed. Early diagnosis allows timely intervention, improving long-term health and educational outcomes.
The initiative also includes health education and awareness activities to encourage healthy eating habits, personal hygiene, physical activity and preventive healthcare among students. Parents will receive information about any health concerns identified during the screening, enabling them to seek appropriate follow-up care.
Public health specialists believe school health programmes are among the most effective ways to improve child health at the population level. Regular medical check-ups help reduce disease burden, improve school attendance and support children’s overall physical and cognitive development.
Officials stated that digital record-keeping and coordinated follow-up will help monitor children’s health status more efficiently. The programme is expected to strengthen collaboration between schools, healthcare providers and families while ensuring continuity of care for students requiring medical attention.
The annual screening initiative aligns with the government’s broader focus on preventive healthcare and child welfare. By providing routine health assessments to nearly 1.89 crore children, Gujarat aims to strengthen school health services and promote healthier futures for young learners across the state.
