In a move that underscores a gradual shift towards preventive healthcare, hospitals in Noida have begun administering free HPV vaccines to adolescents. The initiative, anchored at Child PGI in Sector 30, is aimed at reducing the long-term burden of cervical cancer by targeting early-age immunisation.
The programme reflects a growing recognition within public health systems that prevention, particularly through timely vaccination, can significantly alter disease outcomes. Human papillomavirus, a leading cause of cervical cancer, has long remained under-addressed in India’s immunisation efforts. By extending free access to vaccines, local authorities appear to be testing a model that could be scaled more widely.
Doctors associated with the drive note that awareness remains a challenge. Vaccine hesitancy, coupled with limited understanding of HPV-related risks, has slowed uptake in the past. The current campaign, therefore, combines immunisation with outreach efforts aimed at parents and adolescents.
While the initiative is local in scope, it aligns with broader policy signals from the Centre that emphasise preventive care as a cost-effective strategy. If sustained, such efforts could ease pressure on tertiary care systems that continue to bear the weight of late-stage cancer cases.
