The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released the revised Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) operational guidelines to strengthen India’s efforts to reduce anaemia among children, adolescents, women and pregnant mothers. The updated framework focuses on improving early screening, expanding iron and folic acid supplementation, strengthening nutrition awareness and enhancing monitoring at the grassroots level.
Anaemia remains one of India’s major public health challenges, affecting physical growth, cognitive development and maternal health. According to health experts, timely diagnosis and preventive interventions are essential to reduce complications such as fatigue, weakened immunity, poor pregnancy outcomes and developmental delays among children.
The revised guidelines place greater emphasis on routine screening through schools, Anganwadi centres and primary healthcare facilities. Frontline healthcare workers, including ASHAs and ANMs, will play a key role in identifying individuals at risk, distributing iron and folic acid supplements and promoting healthy dietary practices.
Health authorities have also highlighted the importance of balanced nutrition rich in iron, folate and vitamin B12. Public awareness campaigns will encourage the consumption of green leafy vegetables, pulses, millets, fortified foods and other iron-rich dietary sources alongside appropriate supplementation.
The updated framework strengthens digital monitoring systems to improve programme implementation and track progress across states. Better data collection and reporting are expected to help policymakers identify high-burden districts and ensure timely delivery of healthcare services.
Public health specialists believe that reducing anaemia will have long-term benefits for maternal and child health, school performance and workforce productivity. Integrated efforts involving healthcare providers, educational institutions and community organizations are expected to improve awareness and encourage early intervention.
The revised guidelines also align with the government’s broader objective of strengthening preventive healthcare under the National Health Mission. By combining nutrition, screening and community outreach, the programme aims to significantly reduce the prevalence of anaemia across vulnerable populations.
As implementation begins across the country, health officials expect the updated Anaemia Mukt Bharat strategy to strengthen public health outcomes and improve the quality of life for millions of beneficiaries.
