The Chandigarh health department has received administrative approval to set up a 50 bed critical care block, a move aimed at expanding the city’s capacity to handle medical emergencies and serious illnesses.
The proposed facility will be developed within the government healthcare system and is expected to focus on advanced treatment for critically ill patients. Officials said the block will be equipped with modern intensive care units, high dependency beds, and essential life saving infrastructure to manage trauma cases, severe infections, and other complex medical conditions.
Health department sources said the project has been cleared after assessing the growing pressure on existing hospitals, particularly during peak periods such as disease outbreaks and seasonal surges in patient inflow. The new block is intended to reduce referrals outside the city and improve timely access to specialised care for residents of Chandigarh and neighbouring regions.
Once operational, the critical care block is expected to ease the load on existing ICUs, improve response time during emergencies, and strengthen the overall public health system. Detailed planning, including timelines for construction, staffing, and equipment procurement, will be finalised in the next phase, officials added.
