Tamil Nadu has issued a statewide alert following the death of several crows, prompting health and animal husbandry authorities to step up surveillance for avian influenza. Officials said the deaths, reported from multiple locations, are being treated as a potential warning sign, even as confirmatory laboratory tests are underway.
The Animal Husbandry Department has intensified monitoring of poultry farms, backyard birds, and wet markets, while local bodies have been instructed to ensure safe disposal of bird carcasses. Samples from the affected areas have been sent to designated laboratories to determine the presence of the H5N1 virus or other avian influenza strains.
Health officials said there is no immediate cause for panic, but urged the public to remain vigilant. People have been advised not to touch dead or sick birds and to report unusual bird deaths to local authorities. Poultry handlers have been asked to follow biosecurity norms, including the use of protective gear and strict hygiene practices.
The Health Department has also issued an advisory to hospitals to stay alert for influenza-like illness and to report any suspected cases promptly. Coordination between health, veterinary, and local administration teams has been strengthened to ensure early detection and swift response.
Authorities reiterated that properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe for consumption, and that precautionary measures are aimed at preventing the spread of infection among birds and reducing any risk to humans across Tamil Nadu.
