The Tripura government has announced plans to significantly expand critical care facilities at Agartala’s GB Pant Hospital, with a target of creating 320 intensive care unit beds as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said the move is aimed at improving the availability of advanced treatment facilities and ensuring that patients requiring specialised care do not have to travel outside the state.
Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital is the state’s largest referral hospital and handles a significant share of serious medical cases. The proposed expansion of ICU capacity is expected to improve the hospital’s ability to manage emergencies, critical illnesses and complicated surgeries.
Officials said the project is part of a broader plan to modernise healthcare services in Tripura. The state government has been focusing on upgrading hospitals, adding modern equipment and strengthening medical education to address the growing demand for healthcare services.
The Chief Minister said that expanding critical care infrastructure has become a priority after the lessons learned during the COVID period, when the need for ICU beds and advanced treatment facilities increased sharply across the country.
Health authorities believe the planned expansion will help reduce pressure on existing facilities and improve access to timely treatment for patients across Tripura and neighbouring regions.
