Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has laid the foundation stone for a new multi storey hospital block at the Government General Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, a project expected to strengthen treatment facilities at one of the state’s busiest public health institutions.
The proposed block, estimated to cost around ₹137 crore, will house several specialised medical facilities including intensive care units, trauma care services, modern laboratories and speciality outpatient departments. The expansion is aimed at improving patient care and addressing the growing pressure on the hospital’s existing infrastructure.
Officials said the new building will also include dedicated wards and a chemotherapy unit, which is expected to enhance cancer treatment services at the hospital. The additional infrastructure is intended to support advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities while improving patient management.
The project is part of the state government’s broader effort to upgrade healthcare infrastructure across Kerala’s public hospitals. Authorities say the expansion will help accommodate a larger number of patients while also enabling the hospital to offer more specialised medical services.
Government General Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram receives patients not only from the city but also from nearby districts, making the upgrade an important step in strengthening tertiary care services in the region.
