The Delhi government is examining a proposal to establish a new Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences (DIMS) by integrating four existing government hospitals in the capital. The plan aims to create a large tertiary care institution on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, with a stronger focus on advanced treatment, teaching and medical research.
Officials familiar with the proposal said the initiative is intended to address the growing demand for specialised healthcare services in the city. By bringing multiple hospitals under a single institutional framework, the government hopes to streamline administration, improve coordination among departments and expand the availability of super speciality care.
The proposed institute is expected to function as a major referral centre, drawing patients from Delhi as well as neighbouring states. Authorities believe that consolidating infrastructure and medical expertise could help raise treatment standards and strengthen training opportunities for doctors and medical students.
The move is also seen as part of the government’s broader effort to expand public healthcare capacity in the national capital. Delhi’s hospitals continue to face heavy patient inflow, with several facilities operating at or beyond their intended capacity.
A final decision on the proposal is expected after detailed consultations with health department officials and hospital administrators. If approved, the institute could become one of the largest public medical institutions in the city, with a mandate that combines patient care, education and research.
