Telangana Expands Free Diagnostic Services at Government Hospitals

State Health Department Focuses on Affordable Access to Medical Testing

The Telangana government has announced the expansion of free diagnostic services across multiple government hospitals and public health centres as part of efforts to improve affordable healthcare access for patients.

Health officials said the initiative aims to strengthen early disease detection and reduce the financial burden on low and middle-income families seeking medical treatment. Additional laboratory facilities and diagnostic equipment are expected to be introduced in district hospitals and urban health centres under the expanded programme.

According to the state health department, services will include routine blood tests, diabetes screening, thyroid testing, kidney and liver function assessments, and several other basic investigations commonly required during outpatient consultations.

Public health experts say affordable diagnostics play an important role in preventive healthcare, particularly for chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, which continue to rise across India.

Doctors also note that delayed diagnosis often leads to more severe complications and higher treatment costs, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where access to private healthcare remains limited.

Focus Grows on Preventive Healthcare and Public Health Infrastructure

Healthcare analysts believe states are increasingly focusing on preventive health systems instead of relying only on treatment-based models. Several state governments have recently announced investments in screening programmes, telemedicine services, and digital health infrastructure to improve accessibility.

The expansion of diagnostic services comes at a time when India’s public healthcare system continues to face pressure from rising patient volumes and uneven medical infrastructure between urban and rural regions.

Medical professionals say awareness campaigns encouraging regular health check-ups could help improve early identification of lifestyle-related illnesses among working-age populations.

Officials indicated that the programme may be expanded further in phases depending on hospital capacity and patient demand across districts.
